A Delicate Imbalance

My second novel is called A Delicate Imbalance. It is the story of David Lavaliere, a man born at the mid-point of the 20th century in northern Virginia. David grows up in a middle class environment with a devoted and loving mother, but a father who treats David mostly with indifference. When David is still in grade school two events occur that have a major impact on the rest of his childhood and his early adult life. The first one involves an accident in which David is struck on the side of his head by an errant baseball. The serious injury causes a concussion, but David is both disoriented and afraid to tell his mother what happened. He gets no medical treatment and suffers from hallucinations as a result of the blow. Not long after, his mother contracts an incurable disease and David can only watch her deteriorate helplessly. Her death leaves a serious void in his life. Beginning when he is in high school, David has a series of relationships with girls. Each time, it seems, something happens to spoil what appears to be a hopeful development in the relationship. He suffers one disappointment after another until, out of college and working in Washington, D.C., he meets Pamela. David, almost afraid to get involved with anyone new, reluctantly lets himself become infatuated with Pamela. She likes him but sees something a little unusual in David. Eventually, she warms to him, and the greatest relationship of his life finally comes to fruition for David. The rest of the story is about their lives together, but David is unable to avoid difficulties, and even a tragedy, that stem from his childhood. The only person that can possibly help him is Pamela. She has the desire, commitment and dedication to help David, but ultimately the resolution rests primarily with David. In A Delicate Imbalance there are stories within the main story that involve secondary characters. I think they contribute to the novel and give it greater depth. One involves David's Uncle Cyrus who fights in WWI and almost dies when he gets separated from his unit and suffers frostbite. Another deals with Pamela's roommate, Margaret, a German girl who has an unusual childhood in Germany. When you have a chance to read A Delicate Imbalance I hope you will contact me with your thoughts about the book. I think A Delicate Imbalance has great potential for being made into a movie. If you are a screenwriter, contact me and we can put a plan together.
